Grateful Dead: “Casey Jones”
ALBUM: Workingman’s Dead
YEAR: 1970
WRITERS: Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter
The second single from Workingman’s Dead, it never charted, but has received rock radio airplay since it came out.
Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart says “Casey Jones” is a message song, plain and simple. “It’s an anti-coke song. Just like it says, ‘Trouble ahead, trouble behind,’ Right? ‘You know that notion just crossed my mind.’ I always thought it’s not good to snort cocaine. And that song told of the perils of cocaine. It’s a nowhere drug — absolutely nowhere. Not unless you like to be a rat in the bottom of a barrel chasing your tail – and then you can do a lot of cocaine.”
Former Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter celebrates his 75th birthday today (June 23rd).
